Protecting the innocence of your children

It seems to me that children grow up too fast now a days.  I do not want to be overprotective of my children, but at the same time I want to protect their innocence.  Here is a small list of things I try to do to help protect the innocence of my children.

1.  Set a good example

I do not want my children to grow up drinking alcohol , smoking cigarettes, and doing drugs, so I do not drink alcohol , smoke cigarettes, or do drugs.  I try to avoid using inappropriate language, and avoid yelling if at all possible.  If you ever wanted a good reason to live a better life, now you have one.  Be a good example for your children.

2.  Monitor television and computer use

The television and computer are filled with terrible things.   You should definitely have blocks on your computers and internet devices.  I am going to get rid of my  satellite television, and get  a netflix family plan, if they can cut out all inappropriate shows and movies.

3.  Choose your children’s friends wisely

I want my children’s friends to have the same values that our family has.  I don’t want my children to hang out with children that are a lot older than they are, because older kids usually know more bad stuff than younger kids know.  Make sure that their friend’s parents monitor the television and computer use.  Some people have no morals, and I want to keep my children away from those people during the more formable periods of their lives.

4.  Spend time with your children

Spending time with your children is one of the most important things you can do for them.  If you are with them and spending time with them, then you can personally guide them down the path you want them to go down.

Some day my children will have to start making their own choices, but for now they are very young and I am going to guide them and do my best to protect their innocence.

Gardening with your children

I am thinking about writing a children’s book about gardening with your children.  There is many benefits to gardening for children.  Gardening may be more of a health topic than a moral topic, but it is a skill that is fading from our society.  I started gardening three years ago, and it is something fun for our family to do together.  Here are a few of the benefits of gardening with your children.

1.  Playing  outside -  Many children spend lots of time in front of the television.  Gardening is a good way to get children to go outside.

2.  Work ethic –  Establishing a good work ethic in your children while they are young is a good idea.  Let them see work can be enjoyable.

3.  Eating healthy –  When children help grow the vegetables, they are sometimes more interested in eating them.  Eating fresh from the garden avoids many herbicides, insecticides, and preservatives.

4.  Spending quality time with your children –  My boys love being in the garden with me.  They really love getting to dig in the dirt with their little shovels.

5.  Exercise  -  Working in the garden is good exercise for children and adults.

6.  Becoming aware of the food supply –  There is a large disconnect between people and their food supply.  Children should know that food does not originate from a box.

7.  Learning basic skills –  Working with their hands and learning basic skills can be a very profitable thing for children.  They can learn to work with basic hand tools, while helping you build boxes for your garden beds, or trellises for your climbing plants.

How to not discipline your children

I just saw a mother on tv dump hot sauce in her five-year old son’s mouth, and then put him in a cold shower. The avenue of discipline this mother chose was unbelievable to me. The most disturbing part of the video was how angry the mother was.
This video really stresses the fact to me that parents need to control their anger when they are disciplining their children. This video also makes me want to go hug my children and tell them how much I love them, but it is eleven o clock pm, so I won’t do that.

New book idea, maybe?

I am thinking about writing a children’s book that will warn little children about the dangers of smoking. I am not trying to offend smokers, I just want parents to have an easy way to talk to their children about smoking. I think most parents (even smokers) don’t want their children to smoke. Is this a good idea or a bad idea?? Respond in the comment section please. This book is focusing on health not morals, but I still think it can be profitable for children.

Parents, Love Each Other

Parents need to love their children.  The most important thing that I want my children to know is that I love them.  The next thing I want them to know is that their parents love each other.  Children know if their parents are fighting, whether you try to hide it or not.  Parents do have to argue every once in a while, we try to hide it from our children.

One of the best ways for children to know their parents love each other, is for their parents to actually love each other.  My wife wanted me to read Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs, so I did.  The book spells out the roles for a man and a wife, and tells you how to avoid the cycle of fighting with each other.

I need to express my feelings to my wife.  I need to tell my wife that I love her, and treat her like I love her.  I need my wife to tell me why she is mad, I cannot read minds.  It is hard for me to fix the problem, if I don’t know what the problem is.  The problem is not always something I can fix, and that is something I also need to realize.

We also maintain a physical relationship.  A physical relationship is the one thing that  separates a husband and wife relationship from every other relationship.

Parents love your children and love each other.  Do not be afraid to get a little advice from a book every once in a while, sometimes they can be very helpful. Happy parents=Happy children.
